What is a Trophy?

Everyday, hunters, fisherman, and trappers send me photos to post on the White Buffalo Outdoors website and on the White Buffalo Outdoors Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.  Some, explain to me that their trophy is not the largest and that I do not have to post it.  I always respond “If your harvest is something that you will remember for a lifetime, it is no doubt a trophy.”

I have caught big fish and harvested large deer here in Iowa.  However, these moments are not imprinted in my mind like other outdoor adventures I have had, adventures where I harvested smaller fish and deer.

I remember my first ever deer in more detail than the 163″ 12 pointer I shot.  I remember catching catfish with my grandmother who is no longer here, catfish that were just a few pounds.  When I was a kid, I went duck hunting on a rainy day.  Sitting on the bank for 5 hours and not seeing 1 duck, I finally had enough and left.  As I started walking down the shoreline, a goose jumped out of the tall grass right by me feet.  Alarmed, I quickly drew my 20 gauge single shot shotgun and smoked him.  This was my first goose I ever shot.

These moments I consider trophies.

A trophy in the outdoors is a memorable moment attached to the harvest of an animal that will stick with you for the rest of your life.

This deer I harvested during the 2018 Iowa shotgun season.  As you can see, this deer is no Iowa giant!  Wearing a fit bit that day, (fit bits were popular that year) I found that I walked 17 miles for this deer.  This was and still is one my favorite trophies!
